Give us a man as mentri besar, says Selangor Perkasa
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 22 ― Malay rights group Perkasa said today that the next mentri besar of Selangor must be male even as Pakatan Rakyat (PR) which governs the state has put up Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as its sole candidate.
“In Islam itself, it is stressed that to choose a leader of caliph, priority must be given to a man,” the Selangor chapter’s chief Abu Bakar Yahya said in a statement.
The group also stressed that only the Sultan has the power to determine who becomes the mentri besar (MB).
PR cannot assume that its candidate Dr Wan Azizah will automatically become the MB, it said.
“Respect the position and jurisdiction of Sultan such as the one enshrined in the Selangor Constitution 1959,” said Abu Bakar.
“Selangor Perkasa will submit to and uphold the decision of the Sultan if His Highness chooses a new MB for this state, ” he added.
Last month, the group questioned the need to appoint a woman as the state’s mentri besar today, saying the notion suggested there is no man within PR is qualified to lead.
According to Abu Bakar, male leaders in Selangor PR are “no longer manly” since they do not know how to assert their authority
